Itinerary:
This tour is designed to show the best of indigenous Baroque art in three churches located in the south east part of Cusco; Andahuaylillas, Canincunca and Huaro house the best samples of indigenous art captured through paintings under European parameters but with elements of culture, nature and local conjuncture of the sixteenth and seventeenth century.
The tour starts in the morning with pick up from your accommodation in Cusco around 08:30am and we will head towards the South East of Cusco, the first place to visit is Purified Virgin of Canincunca It has a Renaissance style and retains more than beautiful 60 sculptures and 50 paintings of the Cusqueña School of Art, in addition to silverware, altarpieces and other movable goods.
Later the tour continues in the churches of San Juan Bautista de Huaro, It has a Renaissance style and retains more than beautiful 60 sculptures and 50 paintings of the Cusqueña School of Art, in addition to silverware, altarpieces and other movable goods.
We will then follow towards the the church of Andahuaylillas, considered the Sistine of America for the wealth of mural art it contains, it is awarded to the name of San Pedro Apóstol.
Lunch here is optional.
After lunch we will follow to Rumicolca which can be seen alongside the road, was built by the Huari culture around 800 AD, before the rise of the Inca. We will then visit visit Tipon important hydraulic center for the Incas. And will arrive in Cusco approximately at 6pm
Places to visit:
Tipón – Located east of Cusco, they are Inca ruins that may have been a park of the upper class or an agricultural center. Even today the water runs through the canals, and the large terraces are in perfect condition. Several surrounding ruins have been excavated, and many more are visible below ground.
Canincunca – Located in an old Wari center, next to the Urcos lagoon, Canincunca is named after the gorge on the road from Cusco to Puno. The construction of the chapel began at the beginning of the 17th century and consists of a single nave, with interior walls that are richly decorated with murals and gold leaf ribbons.
Huaro – It has a Renaissance style and preserves more than 60 beautiful sculptures and 50 paintings of the Cusqueña School of Art, in addition to the cutlery, altarpieces and other movable goods. Built in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, the impressive murals inside cover the entire roof and walls.
Andahuallilas – This majestic art is also reflected in the Mudejar influence coffered ceiling, the mural paintings by Luis de Riaño, paintings by the Cusqueña School of Art, the polychromy of the ceilings and the triumphal arch that divides the presbytery and the main nave. Its baptistery preserves the baptismal formula in Latin, Spanish, Quechua, Aymara and Puquina.
Pikillaqta – It is a town of the Wari. Wari was the center of the town and other cities like Pikillaqta were influenced by it. The Wari also inhabited many other sites around the area. The site was occupied from around 550 to 1100 AD. Its main use was for ceremonies and the site was not complete when it was abandoned.
